Syria air strikes: Russia denies tampering with suspected chemical attack site

Russia has denied interfering with evidence at the site of the suspected Syrian chemical attack which led to Western air strikes on Saturday.
In an interview for BBC's Hardtalk, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: "I can guarantee that Russia has not tampered with the site."
Concern about tampering was raised by the US envoy to the international chemical weapons watchdog.
International inspectors are trying to reach the site in Douma, near Damascus.
The UK's envoy to the watchdog, the OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), has called for the inspectors to be given "unfettered access" to Douma, a town that was a rebel stronghold at the time of the attack on 7 April and is now under the control of the Syrian government and Russian military.
Speaking as the OPCW gathered in The Hague to discuss the crisis, Peter Wilson dismissed as "ludicrous" Russian suggestions that Britain had helped stage a fake attack.
In other developments:

What happened in Douma?

The suspected attack, denied by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, reportedly killed dozens of people in Douma, in the Eastern Ghouta region.
Two bombs filled with chemicals were reportedly dropped several hours apart on the town.

Syrian medical sources say bodies were found foaming at the mouth, and with discoloured skin and cornea burns.
US sources said they had obtained blood and urine samples from victims which had tested positive for chlorine and a nerve agent.

What did Lavrov say exactly?

Kenneth Ward, US envoy to the OPCW, said: "It is our understanding the Russians may have visited the attack site.

"We are concerned they may have tampered with it with the intent of thwarting the efforts of the OPCW Fact- Finding Mission to conduct an effective investigation."
Speaking to the BBC, the Russian foreign minister denied chemical weapons had been used in Douma.
"I cannot be impolite with the heads of other states, but you quoted the leaders of France and the UK and US and, frankly speaking, all the evidence they quoted was based on media reports and social media."
The event did not take place, he said. "What did take place was the staged thing," he added.
Mr Lavrov also questioned why the US, UK and France had carried out their retaliatory air strikes before OPCW inspectors were able to visit the site.

Taylor Swift gets dragged over Earth, Wind & Fire's 'September' cover

Taylor Swift sent the Internet into a tizzy on Friday when she released a breathy, folksy cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's 1978 love jam "September" on Spotify.
Her version stripped away away the original's funk-laden sensibility and presented the tune as a slow-burning countrypolitan song.
Covering a beloved song is tricky, and covering a beloved song in a new style is sure to irk some die-hard fans. So criticism was as swift as it was inevitable.
Monique Judge, a columnist for the black culture magazine the Root, took particularly issue with the cover. In a column titled "Taylor Swift Just Disrespected Earth, Wind & Fire With Her Cover of 'September,'" Judge hoped that the song was "some type of messed up Friday the 13th prank."
"There are certain songs you don't mess with, especially if you don't have the range, and we all know Taylor Swift has all the range of a dial tone," Judge wrote.
"Maurice White did not die for this," she added, referring to one of the song's writers, who died in 2016 at the age of 74 due to complications from Parkinson's disease.
Kelsie Gibson of Popsugar offered a defense of the tune, however lukewarm, in a piece titled "Taylor Swift Just Made a Classic Earth, Wind & Fire Song Country, and I Don't Hate It." In the piece, she argued that "While the stripped-down version is a complete 180 from the soul classic, it's also strangely reminiscent of Swift's older country material."
"I have to say, I kinda love it," Gibson added.
The conversation grew more complicated on Twitter, where the song was met with bewildered detractors and fierce defenders.
"It is with a heavy heart I must announce that I listened to the Taylor Swift cover of September," Connor Finnegan of Inverse tweeted.
One particularly dramatic user said the cover "has killed my spirit!" Another made this bold claim: "Taylor Swift covering September has ruined my Friday."
The cover's defenders were just as passionate, however, calling it everything from "hella lit" to "absolutely beautiful" to "Taylor Swift's greatest cover of all time."
One user wrote that the song "hit me in the feels because my birthday is on 9/20, and it's one of my mother's favorites. (She came of age in the 70's.) I can't wait to play it for her when I get home!"Taylor Swift gets dragged over Earth, Wind & Fire's 'September' cover

Elvis Presley: The Searcher' is a beautiful way to rediscover the man who became King

Here is Elvis, rehabbed at last and brought down from his lofty and lunatic afterlife as an icon, reminding us that he was once just a man.
Of course, he was never just any man, he was ELVIS - from birth, it seems. The surviving twin of a doting mother, raised up from the Depression dirt of Tupelo and postwar slums of Memphis, opening his mouth in front of Sam Phillips' microphone and seamlessly merging black and white American song traditions into a form that was new and everlasting. He was imbued with the holy spirit of gospel music and landed instead on something faddishly called rock 'n' roll.
With a raft of producers that includes Priscilla Presley, director Thom Zimny's insightful and stirring 3 1/2-hour HBO documentary, "Elvis Presley: The Searcher" is a fine demonstration of how the passage of time can help place even the biggest and most overloved superstars into a blessed relief. The film is a calm and deeply empathetic recounting of Presley's life, split in two. The first half takes us up to 1960 and his career-interrupting military service; the second half is, well, the rest of Elvis: movie star, obsessive workhorse, sweat-drenched showman, tragic figure.
A careful melange of archival film and sonic clarity, "The Searcher" is a fine reassessment of Presley's origins and impact. Its many sources, whether alive or dead (from Elvis himself to "Colonel" Tom Parker to writers such as Alan Light and Jon Landau and musicians such as Robbie Robertson and Emmylou Harris) are heard in interviews rather than seen by a camera, which helps maintain a serious focus.

GOAT GIVE BIRTH TO HUMAN KID IN TARABA STATE NIGERA

-3-contenders-emerge-apc-national-chairmanship-position.

The major headlines for mainstream newspapers today, Friday, April 6, are focused on the tussle for the national chairmanship position of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the fresh herdsmen attack in Benue state, the $1bn for arms procurement by the federal government and the outcry by the Senate over the poor performance of the N1.5tr social investment scheme. This Day is reporting that stakeholders of the APC have turned their sights on the national chairmanship seat, barely 24 hours after governors of the party and the National Working Committee (NWC) seemingly resolved the quagmire that had arisen over President Muhammadu Buhari’s rejection of the 12 months tenure extension granted to elected and appointed executives of the party at all levels. According to the publication, names of possible contenders for the position are already being bandied about; prominent among whom are the incumbent national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; the former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole; and a former governor of Cross River state in the Third Republic, Clement Ebri. Oyegun is eligible to seek another four years in office. Speaking on the issue, a senior party official reportedly disclosed: “Right now, three persons are being considered – former Governors Oshiomhole, Clement Ebri and Oyegun.” Front page of This Day, Friday, April 6, 2018 (Photo credit: NAIJ.com) READ ALSO: Local vigilantes allegedly prevent SARS operatives from arresting Melaye Still on the issue of the APC national chairmanship position, The Nation is reporting that a plot is brewing among supporters of the incumbent, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to ensure an extension of his tenure. The proponents of the tenure extension for the embattled APC chairman reportedly want to create a stalemate and dump the decision reached on the National Convention by President Muhammadu Buhari and APC governors. In a bid to stop this plan, President Buhari has allegedly decided to attend the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, April 9, before leaving for London. This is in order to ensure that the decision for the APC to have congresses and a convention, holds. Some party chiefs backing Oyegun had reportedly invited all state chairmen for a meeting on Thursday night, April 5, in a bid to fight back against the president’s decision. They want the state chairmen to push back against Buhari and the governors. Front page of The Nation, Friday, April 6, 2018 (Photo credit: NAIJ.com) Punch is however focused on the herdsmen crisis in Benue state; reporting that members of the House of Representatives from the state raised the alarm over fresh killings in the state, by the herdsmen. Speaking on Thursday, April 5, the lawmakers demanded full military presence in Benue communities constantly being attacked by herdsmen. They pointed out that up to 24 persons were confirmed killed in renewed attacks in the state between April 2 and 4, with several others missing. The aggrieved lawmakers - Dickson Takighir, Mark Terseer-Gbillah, Samuel Udende, and John Dyegh - prevailed on the federal government, once again, to declare the herdsmen as terrorists. Front page of Punch, Friday, April 6, 2018 (Photo credit: NAIJ.com) On its part, Vanguard is reporting that the House of Representatives said that except approval is given by the National Assembly, there would be trouble if President Muhammadu Buhari goes ahead to approve any money for arms procurement. This was stated by Hon Rinamde Shawalu, the chairman of the House Committee on Army, who insisted that the president does not have constitutional powers to approve money for arms procurement without the mandate of the legislature. According to the lawmaker, any such violation was bound to brew trouble between Buhari and the legislative arm of government. The publication noted that the Senate had also taken a swipe at the president over the issue on Wednesday, April 4. Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, vice chairman, Senate committee on media and publicity, had stated: “It has not been approved, it is simply the choice of words. The presidency or the executive cannot spend a single kobo on such a mission unless the National Assembly approves that. “It is only when the Senate or National Assembly approves that the executive can go ahead to spend such money. The executive can only recommend and not to approve.” Front page of Vanguard, Friday, April 6, 2018 (Photo credit: NAIJ.com) PAY ATTENTION: Install our latest app for Android, read best news on Nigeria’s #1 news app The Guardian is however reporting that the Senate has expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government’s N1.5 trillion National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) and described it as a failure. The upper legislative chamber threatened to cut budgetary allocation for the scheme, as it expressed dismay over the fact that it had not made serious impact on Nigerians. The threat was made by Senator Mohammed Danjuma, chairman of the Senate committee on appropriation, when the special adviser to the president on social investment, Mrs Maryam Uwais, appeared before the panel to provide clarification on proposed budget implementation. 9 Challenges Our Students Face in School Today Part I: Poverty & Homeless Families

Some students struggle with completing Math and English assignments, submitting homework on time, and staying focus in class. However, these struggles may be a part of a greater problem that is not clearly seen by parents, guardians, and educators. 9 challenges students face in school are poverty, homeless families, child abuse and neglect, bullying (including cyber bullying), violence, obesity and eating disorders, sex and pregnancy, suicide, drugs, and dropping out. This article reviews the first two challenges which are poverty and homeless families.
Poverty is a major problem in the United States. The gap is widening between the upper class and the lower class sectors of society. The socioeconomic status of children and their families has a profound effect on children’s education, even in a country that prides itself on equal opportunity and fair treatment of all.
The distribution of wealth is skewed in the United States. The poorest 40% of American citizens receive 12% of the national income. In contrast, the wealthiest 20% receive 51% of the national income. There are more than 36 million impoverished Americans. While the majority of poor people are White, racial and ethnic minorities have a higher rate of poverty. More than 17% of American children live in poverty, which constitutes 35% of the poor. The majority of poor children come from families headed by a single female parent. Unemployment is a factor in poverty for some, but many are employed and still live below the poverty line.
Contrary to what many believed possible in the past, education has not eliminated poverty.
Schools have not been designed to properly serve poor children. They reflect and promote a middleclass way of life. What other challenges do impoverished children experience? They often come from homes that are not adequate in terms of shelter, and they may live in dangerous communities. In their neighborhood, they may be exposed to drugs, violent crime, and prostitution, and they may turn to these types of activities themselves at an early age.
Parents of children living in poverty often struggle to provide them with enough quality food and medical coverage. Children living in poverty often come to school without having had enough sleep and without having had breakfast. They often experience family violence, abuse, secondhand smoke, neglect, and inadequate clothing. They may not be able to pay for field trips or other extracurricular activities that might expand their experience base. This is the frightening reality for millions of children. As a teacher, you will likely have impoverished students in your class.
Homelessness is another step down on the ladder of poverty. It is a very real problem faced by 1.5 million children. Many homeless families live in shelters in rural or urban areas. With one income and high rent and living expenses, many families are just one emergency away from disaster.
Homeless children still need to have an education, although when they get to school each morning, they are often hungry and tired. Like many children living in poverty, homeless children move frequently, and are exposed to drugs, violence, crime, and more. Transportation might be an issue for some homeless children, and they miss a great deal of school. When they can attend school, they may be teased about their clothes and the fact they fall asleep in class. They may have difficulty making friends or fear participating in an activity in front of the class. Although many homeless children are with their families, older homeless children may be runaways or may have been kicked out of their homes. Many have been abused sexually and/or physically.
To help homeless families living in homeless shelters or doubling up with another family in an apartment (who are also considered homeless), Congress passed the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act in 1987. This act was put into place to ensure homeless families will receive food, shelter, adult education, job training, and more. Barriers that once kept children out of school, such as not having a birth certificate, proof of immunization, or residency, have been removed by this act. Accordingly, no child is turned away from an education. Unfortunately, budget cuts in recent years have hampered the development of this program.
Teachers who have homeless children in their classroom will need to know how to help and support children without a permanent home. The children may be emotionally needy. Due to lack of access to bathtubs or showers and little food, they may be dirty and hungry. Teachers can be an anchor for these children by showing them compassion and understanding. It may also be a challenge to communicate with parents who do not have regular access to a phone. Of course, the most important thing for homeless children is that their families find a home. Teachers might be able to help by working with local agencies, children, and their families to find a solution to their problem.
Poverty and homeless families are serious challenges that students may be facing today. Be aware of signs or situations that reflect these problems among your students. In the classroom seek to assist your students as best as you can and continue to educate them. Continue to read the other parts of this series to learn more about the challenges students face today.

Your love makes me a better person than ever before since your love flows through my veins and is the blood pumping in my heart. I vow today and forever to always cherish, adore, protect and love you so much. I love you tenderly, beautiful.

68. There is no perfect word in the English vocabulary yet to describe why I love you so much, just as there is no right word to express how much you mean to me. I wish there was, but there are none. I have neither silver nor gold to offer you, but I give you all of me because you deserve it all. You know that I love you right? Well, I do.

69. I can’t promise that a relationship with me will always be rosy and beautiful each and every day, and I can’t promise that there won’t be ups and downs once a while in our walk together. But what I can vow is to treasure and love you with every single breath in me. And everything I do and say will always be for you. I love you beyond words.

70. I want you to have my heart because it is safer with you than with me. And I’m afraid I might lose it if it remains in my possession. With you, I’m a better person than I would ever be. And without you, I’m just a wayfarer; moving from place to place without a particular course or purpose. I love you so much, damsel.
